Sacred and Profane | exhibition
The works on show explore a range of processes that draw on ideas and interpretations of the Sacred and the Profane. It stems from the need of every era to reinvent “spirituality” for itself. Art has the potential to lead us to a place of vision that unites the material and ethereal worlds (Hart 2005:3). Human experience has the possibility to be ordered by the sacred and to create fundamental meaning in the world.

Piece and James Delaney
Downtown Joburg through artist’s eyes by James Delaney  | talk
James Delaney will talk about how the regeneration of the Joburg inner city has impacted on  his artworks. He will be showing works from several series of lithographs and silkscreens, tying together threads of his thoughts and insights into history, architecture, public art and mining, and how all these shape the urban landscape which is currently being repurposed and reinvented.
The location of Piece studio is a good vantage point for the discussion – spires of buildings in his Commissioner Street series can be seen from the windows, and his silkscreens of animals walking the city streets were produced in the same building.

Movement and it’s limitation within an environment by Quinten Edward Williams | exhibition
Movement and its limitation within an environment is a visual-spatial presentation which responds to the vibrancy of partaking in an assemblage, and to the ambivalence of living in a borderland.
The sketching process employed in the making of the artworks occurs through an interface between painting, sculpting and printing. It entails a movement between the painterly and the linear, and of opacities and translucencies.

Battle lines, the death of actually by Craig A Smith | exhibition
Battle lines; a line drawn in the sand, the setting out of boundaries and the brush marks made on the surface of the canvas. The studio is the battlefield, where the push and pull of the human condition is encountered and reflected on. The death of Actually: How much of our experience and emotions are being conditioned by the altered ego on a daily basis? Feeding on the rise of narcissistic thought and opinion, the fuel of Fakebook and Instaglam and Twatter. Giving rise to populist narcissistic leaders in South Africa, America, Turkey, Russia the list goes on…
Maybe we should turn to self and the eternal battle with the super ego, its own becoming. Wrestle empathy away from doubt and anxiety of modern living.
Who will leave the ring?

Gallery MOMO
Pluralities of Being by Todd Gray | exhibition
Pluralities of Being disrupts and questions the role photography plays in the transmission of history and cultural identity. Gray was Michael Jackson’s personal photographer in the 1980’s and remixes his images of iconographic pop culture with photographs made during his time of residency at NIROX in Johannesburg. The work is collaged directly onto the gallery walls, framed photographs overlap and form photographic sculptural reliefs that further question where the image, space and content begin and end. Colliding with a new body of drawings made during his time on residency, Gray reframes and reveals an intimate and collective post-colonial, transatlantic memory.

I was her and she was me and those we might become by Kitso Lynn Lelliott  | exhibition
In the exhibition, the artist interrogates the philosophical underpinnings and ontological construct of race that emerged during the European Imperial era, which in turn have resulted in the production of an ”Othering” using hegemonic colonial languages. Her research further elaborates into the perpetuation of the idea of “racially marked beings” with the associated violent omissions, erasure and deletion of knowledges carried in diverse languages.

STEVENSON
Fugitive by Moshekwa Langa | exhibition
STEVENSON takes pride in announcing Fugitive, a solo exhibition by Moshekwa Langa. Conceived as a homecoming, this will be the artist’s first showing in our Johannesburg gallery, and his first exhibition of new work in this city since 2009. It is often remarked that Langa’s work since the mid-1990s has interrogated land and public and personal politics through the mapping of territory and cultural environments. This exhibition explores these concepts in terms that are personal but not self-directed. Langa immerses himself in the process but allows it to evolve organically, engaging his work in a reflexive conversation.
