FIELD NOTES: EXTRACTS

Field Notes: Extracts , curated by Holly Bynoe, highlights core elements innate to art practices including note-taking, observation, discovery, and transformation.

The collection supports the work of seven emerging artists from the Caribbean and its diasporas including Deborah Anzinger, Gilles Elie-dit-Cosaque, Jasmine Thomas Girvan, Vashti Harrison, Kelly Sinnapah Mary, Joiri Minaya and Holly Parotti. Each artist quietly builds discreet visual narratives to speak widely about their socio-political, gendered and imagined realities. These narratives tempt and contest charged landscapes and mythologies; contend with meaning and markers of becoming; exhume turbulent histories around colonization and its legacy of violence and address important markers of spiritual and metaphysical transformation. Within the margins of liminality, the work collectively examines and engages the significance and banal of the everyday to speculate on all possible futures.

Field Notes: Extracts critiques established mores built around ‘cultural identity’ and offers a space for alternative representations and renderings. It is a wide open space acknowledging and honouring uncertainties in cultural affirmations in order to establish new visualities, pathways and relationships contributing to a more fulfilling understanding of awareness, agency and connectivity.

Field Notes: Extracts is supported in part by public funds from The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) in partnership with The City Council, and private funds from Lambent Foundation and Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
