Afropolis: Stadt, Medien, Kunst

(c) Walther König

While the cities of Europe are shrinking, the countries of the Southern hemisphere see themselves confronted by rapid urbanisation.

The majority of megacities are already to be found in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, but we know very little about African cities, which have evolved beyond the influence of historical, Euro-American role models of urban development. This comprehensive and richly illustrated volume examines structures and development patterns using examples from Lagos, Kinshasa, Johannesburg, Nairobi, and Cairo. New works by artists from Europe and Africa tackle the current challenges of urbanity – in photography and graphic art as well as in sculptures, video pieces, and interactive network art projects.
