Born in 1975, Samson Kambalu is a conceptual artist and memoirist based in London, who held Malawi’s first exhibition of conceptual art in 2000. Exposed to Nietzsche’s writings early in his childhood, his multimedia works in video, drawing, performance and literature show a playfulness and sense of the absurd associated with modernist social critique. His famous work, ‘Holy Ball’ (2000), was a critique of globalization and commercial religion in Malawi. His recent ‘Nyau Cinema’ (Nyau meaning ‘excess’ in Chewa) aims at « escaping the limitations and conventions of everyday life. »
