Deadline: 01 October 2016

The Southern Summer School

Applications are now welcome for The Southern Summer School, a collective project that brings together art practitioners and cultural workers based in South Africa, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

The project begins from the acknowledgment that the colonial involvement of the Dutch and the British empire in South Africa is not only a historical fact that may be consigned to the past, but that coloniality continues to operate in the present. In the four months leading up to the summer school, a program of preparatory workshops titled The Northern Winter Workshops will be organized in various art venues across South Africa, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. These workshops are open to the public and organized by a range of artists, theorists, and activists who address questions of decolonization and social justice within their respective practices.

The Southern Summer School will take place from 17–24 February, 2017 at BAK in Utrecht, the Netherlands. It will conclude with a final open weekend of screenings, workshops, discussions, lectures, and music by participants and guests on February 25–26.

Application for The Southern Summer School is through an open call, and participation is free of charge. The Southern Summer School will cover the costs of travel and accommodation in the Netherlands for those participants based in South Africa.

More details on the program can be found on www.SSS-NWW.org.
