‘POP-UP AFRICA’: IS’ART GALERIE, MADAGASCAR

COPYRIGHT © 2014 GALLERY OF AFRICAN ART

The Gallery of African Art (GAFRA) presents a group exhibition of contemporary works by artists from the island nation of Madagascar. ‘POP-UP AFRICA’™ with the Is’Art Galerie continues GAFRA’s commitment to supporting galleries and artists from the African continent by providing them with exposure to international audiences.

Most of the artists shown live and work in Madagascar, and works have been selected to reflect the breadth of artistic practice on the island – from the very urban works of Isaac Azaly to the more traditional inspired sculptures by Temandrota.

The six artists featured are Tahina Rakotoarivony, Temandrota, Isaac Azaly, Éric Rakoto, AMBI and Vonjiniaina.

Founded in 2011 by Tahina Rakotoarivony, Is’Art Galerie is the only contemporary art gallery in Antananarivo, the capital city of Madagascar. The space is dedicated to the promotion of Malagasy contemporary art. For more than two years, Is’Art Galerie has provided an exhibition space for artists to express themselves through a variety of media and in doing so, revealing the dynamic and diverse characteristics of visual arts practice on Malagasy soil. The gallery plays a vital role in the development of the arts on the island as a space to facilitate cultural debate and promote artistic exchanges.
