Photo Submissions for Black, African and Afro-Diasporic Book Project

A photographic celebration of Black, African and Afro-Diasporic styles and life in Germany.

We are collecting photos from your personal archives, whether they’re from your parents, favorite uncles, aunts, cousins, etc., covering the period from the 70s to the early 2000s. The pictures should capture vivid snapshots of their joyful moments, stylish outfits, or the times they made every party unforgettable.

The main aim of the project is to celebrate the value of our personal archives while shedding light on parts of the Black, African, and Afro-diasporic experience in Germany. The end result will be a book publication.

Who are we? I am Cate Lartey, an artist and freelance curator living in Düsseldorf, Germany. The idea of collecting photos from the personal archives of people of African descent (PAD) in Germany came to me when I asked myself: What does the cultural space of PAD*, especially that of our parents, look like in terms of a visual memory of our life in Germany? What can we refer to when we talk about PAD* life, other than our experiences of racism and discrimination?

I am fortunate to have Latoya Hauginata Breu on board for the creative direction and graphic design. I look forward to collaborating with her to give the photo book a visual language.

We also need your support to make the project a success. Please assist your parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, etc., in sending us their photos in the easiest way for them.

Remember to clearly label all submitted photos with the family name, city, country of origin, and approximate year of origin.
This project is a personal initiative.

We look forward to your submissions!
