Call for Curator: Fondation Fiminco Residency

The primary objective of the residency is to provide artists with a privileged environment for research and production. The artists will be accompanied by the Fondation’s team throughout their residency. They will benefit from an environment that facilitates collaboration with other residents and with external organisations.

Artists will have artistic and technical support according to their needs and the requirements of the project that they wish to develop: technical assistance with production, administrative support, and assistance with communication and networking. French as a foreign language courses will be offered to international artists to facilitate their integration and help with daily exchanges required during the residency.

The Fondation Fiminco residency is a place for professional development that helps artists gain visibility on the French art scene and establish a network. The Fondation organises meetings with professionals from the art world, curators, collectors, gallery owners, museum associations, journalists and art critics, notably during open studios. Open doors are also organized, allowing the public to discover the studios of the artists-in-residence. A presentation of the artists’ work is envisioned inside the Fondation’s exhibition spaces.

Who can apply?

Fondation Fiminco is launching an open call for international curators who can show a notable professional body of work, for a three-month research, creation and production residency taking place in Romainville (Seine-Saint-Denis).

The planned residency period is : From march to may 2024. The residency program is open to international curators of any age.

The curatorial residence is an integral part of Fondation Fiminco’s art residency program which hosts 12 international artists in residence all at once for a period of 11 months, from September 2023 to July 2024, as well as short-term residency programs in collaboration with institutional partners around the world.

Selection

A jury composed of professionals from the world of art and culture, as well as representatives of the Fondation Fiminco, will make a shortlist of candidates based on their application. The shortlisted curators will then be invited for an interview (via videoconference) in early January 2024.

Applications can be written either in French or English and submitted via the online form before midnight, December 10, 2023, CET. For your online application, a google account is required.

MANDATORY DOCUMENTS
(If the application does not contain these elements, it will not be considered)

1/ CV in which candidates should mention their educational and professional background. (2 pages maximum).

2/ A letter of intent presenting the research project and program ideas that candidates wish to implement during the 3-month residency. Candidates are asked to propose a project involving an international or French institution, related to their personal research topic. (2 pages maximum).

3/ One or more letters of recommendation addressed to the jury, supporting the candidate and their accompanying project. (3 lettres maximum)

4/ A portfolio presenting one or more recent projects representative of the curator’s approach. (5 pages maximum)

OPTIONAL DOCUMENTS

5/ Publications, videos, etc. any other resources the curator deems useful to bring to the attention of the pre-selection committee (participations in conferences or symposiums, press articles, films, interviews, etc.)

Grant

To support the research project, a research grant totaling 3,000€ (incl. VAT) will be awarded for the duration of the residency.
A production grant of up to 1,000€ (incl. VAT) will also be awarded for the creation of an event, subject to approval by the Fondation.

Administrative support 

The Fiminco Fondation offers support with any administrative formalities, such as visa applications, and can also help with the search for additional grants.

Professional support

Professional support is provided as-needed basis and in line with the project being developed: research support, dissemination and communication support (individual videos presenting the curator and his or her research / work in progress).

Transport

To facilitate mobility, the Fiminco Fondation covers the cost of a round trip to and from the commissioner’s country of origin. Funding is subject to a ceiling based on location, and reimbursement must be accompanied by documentary evidence (train or plane ticket, fuel costs, tolls, etc.). The Fondation Fiminco curatorial residency will last 3 months, from March to May 2024.

Presence

The Fondation Fiminco residency requires a daily and continous presence as well as in the on-site housing for the duration of the residency. Any long-term absence must be discussed with the foundation’s team in order to enable the project to be carried out effectively. The dates of arrival and departure for the residency are set by the Fiminco Fondation in consultation with the curator.

Accommodation

The curator will be housed in a furnished studio with a private bathroom (between 20 and 25 square meters). She/he will also have access to communal kitchens and living areas. Individual accommodation is made available to the curator, as allocated by the Fondation Fiminco. On the arrival and departure of the curator, a joint inventory of fixtures is carried out. Resident undertake to use the various premises at their disposal in a peacful manner, maintaining the in good condition, and to report any
malfunctions observed. The residents agree to respect the living and working environment of the other residents. The Fondation Fiminco residency’s accommodation is non-smoking and cannot accommodate pets. The keys and a badge for access to the residency buildings and floors are given on arrival.
