As part of a unique « book residency project » between documenta 14’s aneducation and C&’s Center of Unfinished Business two libraries get in conversation with each other: Contemporary And’s collection of books, presented in the Center of Unfinished Business at the ifa Gallery Berlin, focussing on aspects of colonial legacies and contemporary societies and the library of Lucius and Annemarie Burckhardt exhibited during documenta 14 at Peppermint in Kassel.

The latter consists of books related to the method of strollology as invented and practiced by the landscape architect Lucius Burckhardt (1925–2003), who taught at the University of Kassel, and his wife Annemarie (1930–2012). Taking the act of walking as a point of departure for their method the two unconventional thinkers have substantially influenced the development of documenta 14’s process oriented educational programme aneducation and the walks offered by the Chorus.

In the context of the „book residency project“ C& and aneducation exchanged carefully selected books from their respective libraries which were then presented in the other collections’s context at Peppermint in Kassel and in the Center of Unfinished Business at ifa Gallery Berlin. As described by Walter Benjamin in his essay “Unpacking my Library,” the process opens up the work and influence of the collectors as well as their own relationship to the book collection.

Clare Butcher is a teacher and curator from Zimbabwe, who cooks as part of her practice. She arranges reading, writing, and research sessions with students at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the Piet Zwart Institute’s Masters of Education in Art & Design program. Her own education includes an MFA from the School of Missing Studies in 2015, a Masters in Curating the Archive from the University of Cape Town in 2012, and participation in the de Appel Curatorial Programme in 2008/09.

Sepake Angiama is an educator and curator whose interest lies between critical, discursive education practices and the social framework. Previously, Sepake served as Director of Education for Manifesta 10, Saint Petersburg, Russia, Curator of Public Programmes at Turner Contemporary, Margate, England, and Public Programmes Coordinator at the Hayward Gallery, London. She has devised education programmes for a number of leading international institutions, including Tate Modern & Hayward Gallery, London. Sepake earned her M.A. in Contemporary Art Curating at the Royal College of Art, London, where she received the Monique Beudert Award for her exhibition project.

With the programme “Untie to Tie – On Colonial Legacies and Contemporary Societies”, the ifa Gallery Berlin invites to reflect on the impacts of colonial legacies, which continue to globally influence contemporary realities and everyday life. From March 2017 to March 2018, four chapters will address this topic through different lenses: global relatedness, urban cultures, intersectional feminism, and a closing chapter dedicated to riots and resistance.
