February is dedicated to Black History Month (BHM). This year, Each One Teach One (EOTO) eV offers within the BHM more than a dozen events afrodiasporischer history and culture.

Opening / Opening
The year 2019, the halfway point of the United Nations (UN) marked proclaimed decade for people of African descent . What has happened in Germany and Berlin since the beginning of the decade and what needs to be done in Germany, but also with our African partners * internally to implement the Decade, we want to discuss at the opening of our Black History Month. The conversation with the representative of the UN Decade in Brussels, Elisabeth Kaneza and Dr. Maisha Auma, Peggy Piesche and Katja children of diversifying Matters will be moderated by Karen Taylor. Conference languages are English and German.

Afro Lux Market
Afro Lux will be holding its next weekend market. In addition to mouth watering culinary highlights, there will be artists and vendors from Africa and the African Diaspora with handmade clothing, jewelry, makeup, art, toys and other gifts – and a performance of live music on Sunday evening. Here everyone will find the perfect present for Their loved ones.

Black Business Matters
Black Business Matters is a platform to meet other professionals and business people, to recognize and create business opportunities. Having a focus on black entrepreneurship is about promo ting and supporting ourselves. Black Business Matters (BBM) is a referral network, where the business community can mutually benefit from one another. BBM is about giving eachother advise, creating new business projects and providing role models for the younger generation. Being Involved in Black Business Matters Means contributing to the success of your own business. This event is for Black, African and African diasporic communities. Please register here or here .

Perspectives on Black queerness – Ballroom Culture in Berlin (feat House of Melody.)
Join us as we explore the Berlin Ballroom scene, reflect on Ballroom history and get to understand the meaning behind its categories and moves. Right after the event, everybody is invited to head on to the « Love is in the Air » Kiki ball by kiki house of Arise at SchwuZ.

Reading: Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor
The award-winning Kenyan author Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor read from their works Dust and her new novel The Dragonfly Sea . In addition there are passages from the German translation of Dust ample opportunity for questions and discussion with the author.

Children’s Books Reading
Michelle Bartley and Cassianne Lawrence wants to read From Their children’s books « Giraffe Travels » and « African Kid ». The Following conversation of the two authors about writing children’s books in different cultural contexts will be paralleled by a Tebalou workshop for kids with handicraft work and painting. The event will be held in English.

Brazil is unthinkable without Afro-Brazilian culture. The Black History Month 2019 offers a versatile theme night on the history and presence of black people in Brazil and celebrates this Afro-Brazilian culture, cuisine and spirituality. Wagner Carvalho, Zé de Paiva, Tai Linhares and Murah Soares.

Movie: « The Mayor’s Race » A documentary film by Loraine Blumenthal
Marvin Rees is a man in his 40’s. Having experienced poverty and racism in his life, he wants to shape the society he lives in and Believes political office will give him the power to do that. In 2012 he runs for mayor in Bristol, UK. The journey into politics hits him with rejection, failure and at inner struggle did eventually leads to the biggest challenge of his life. THE MAYOR’S RACE is about the desire to overcome doubt and the boundaries between social background and power. The movie will be shown in English. The event is a cooperation of Werkstatt der Kulturen , Initiative of Black People in Germanyand Each One Teach One (EOTO) eV
