The daad artists-in-berlin program celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and is using this as an opportunity to look not to the past, but to the future. In so doing, daad tries to take up a theme which occupies artists from all kinds of creative backgrounds: the relationship between art and reality.
How does art capture reality? What kind of reality does art produce? And where could room for innovation be found? In a world of all-encompassing globalization, of unfettered financial capitalism, of the detached communication created by new media, we are constantly in rapid movement and striving to find a way to anchor ourselves in this unsecured territory. What is (still) real and possible today? We need to negotiate again the relationship between daily reality and artistic work; between the documented and the invented, the analogue and the digital, the public and the private; between artistic languages and transformed, hybridized artistic identities. what concepts, or physically tangible qualities, of reality do artists create? which term of reality do they take as a starting point when setting off in search of the new? with our jubilee festival we want to approach to these themes, weaving performances of all forms of art together to form a tapestry of positions and perspectives.
