Janine Jembere: Devotion. A Narrative Sound Collage for Different Futures

In the Gropius Bau’s atrium, Janine Jembere invites visitors to listen to a narrative sound collage. This centres on the somatic and sensory experience of music and asks questions about what sustains desires and imagination.

Devotion is a narrative sound collage that has been newly commissioned by the Gropius Bau. How can we tune into specific narratives and join in the dance of somatic knowledge? Janine Jembere often works collaboratively to explore the role that music can play in creating different futures. She considers the relationship of sound to the body and our sensory experience of the world. Devotion asks how we can tune in and continue to dance the dance. The piece is presented in the atrium as the final event of Ámà: 4 Days on Caring, Repairing and Healing.

Janine Jembere is a filmmaker and sound artist based in Vienna. She lectures at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and is a theory curator at Tanzquartier Wien – Centre for Contemporary Choreography and Performance. She was a member of the Willful Weeds research group and co-edited the book Despite Dispossession: An Activity Book (2021). Her current touring exhibition by ifa, EVROVISION, will be presented in Athens, Berlin, Kaliningrad, Nicosia, Novi Sad and Tbilisi, among other cities from 2021 to 2026.

This sound installation is part of the event “Ámà: 4 Days on Caring, Repairing and Healing” running form 4-7November at Gropius Bau.
