‘Africa Remix’ considers itself as the first comprehensive publication on emerging contemporary art in and from Africa at the turn of the millennium.
It features more than 80 artists from nearly 30 countries, from Egypt and Morocco to South Africa, thereby representing the geographic diversity of the continent. The survey includes both well-known artists who are already established on the international scene as well as new, emerging talents. In an attempt to do justice to the complexity of current artistic production, Africa Remix focuses on film, documentary photography, fashion, music, and literature, in addition to the fine arts. Experts in the field give extensive introductions to the different artistic positions and their sources of inspiration. Instead of discussing the artwork in the traditional terms of postcolonial discourse, this publication concentrates on the ‘fact of the present’ (Simon Njami): the works are seen as an expression of the direct influence of the present on the artist. A specially developed illustrated dictionary of important aspects of African art and culture completes the volume.
