Greatmore Studios was established in November 1998 in response to a lack of studios and spaces for art production in Cape Town.
With its residency program, Greatmore facilitates cultural exchange and creative dialogue by bringing together artists and curators from different cultural and national backgrounds in a stimulating working environment. Permanent studios are available for local artists, as well as five work spaces for visiting artists from abroad. During their three-month residency, visiting artists are expected to collaborate with the local artists, participate in community outreach programs, and produce new work which they exhibit at the end of their stay. This creative environment gives artists the opportunity to come together to develop new ideas and to stretch the boundaries of their artistic practice. In addition to work spaces, Greatmore also makes other resources available, such as free Internet access, training in different computer programs, and assistance in designing websites. Exhibitions, workshops, studio showcases, and public events provide a platform for emerging and established artists to present their work and introduce themselves to a local and international audience.
