Sue Williamson: That Particular Morning

On 25 July, Goodman Gallery Johannesburg will open ‘That Particular Morning’, an exhibition featuring video installations from No more fairy tales, a series of filmed conversations, which highlight the reality of daily life in South Africa twenty years after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

That particular morning is Williamson’s first solo exhibition in Johannesburg since her prestigious survey show Can’t Remember, Can’t Forget at the Apartheid Museum in 2017.

The exhibition takes its title from the most recent film installation from the series, which features a conversation with Siyah Ndawela Mgoduka, the son of a policeman assasinated in December 1989. The film explores topics around forgiveness, loneliness, respect, and the differing attitudes of two generations toward the processes of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings.

In 2018 Williamson received the prestigious Ellen Kuzwayo Award, which is given to individuals who make outstanding contributions toward the betterment of society and higher education in South Africa. More recently, Williamson’s iconic installation depicting the demolition of District Six, The Last Supper Revisited, opened at the National Museum of African Art in Washington as part of the exhibition I Am: Contemporary Women Artists of Africa.
