From November 9 through 12, Paris Photo, the international art fair for photography, will return.

It will reunite 160 galleries and 31 art book dealers across 4 sectors: Main Gallery Sector, PRISMES sector, Book sector and the new Film/Video sector. Discover the most important selection of exceptional photographic art and published works from 30 countries worldwide. 29 Solo shows delve deeper into the work of one artist. The new film/video sector allows exhibitors to spotlight artists who explore the moving image featuring this year: Evangelia Kranioti, Goran Skofic, Hao Jingban, Laura Henno, Noémie Goudal, Roy Samaha, Sergio Vega, Smith, and Vanessa Beecroft. PRISMES, dedicated to large formats, series and installations highlights 14 galleries exhibiting major works and unveiling specially commissioned projects. This year, the sector located in the Salon d’Honneur will feature works by Aurélie Pétrel, Evangelia Kranioti, Gilles Caron, Grey Crawford, Henry Chalfant, John Chiara, Jungjin Lee, Karlheinz Weinberger, Katsunobu Yaguchi, Klaus Rinke, Nadev Kander, Timm Rautert, Victor Burgin, and Wilhelm Schürmann.

Paris Photo is a key event for collectors, art world professionals and those passionate about art and photography. A place for encounters and the exchange of ideas, public programming is an essential component of the fair and includes curated exhibitions, talks, awards, book signing sessions, on- and off-site installations, and special broadcasting. Guest of Honour for the 21st edition, Karl Lagerfeld highlights a selection of exhibitor artworks on show thus revealing his own unique vision of the fair also presented in a special edition book published by Steidl.

Public programming

Film/Artist Videos—MK2 Grand Palais
Paris Photo launches a film and video sector in collaboration with MK2 (Grand Palais) exploring the different practices and uses of images. Marin Karmitz (distributor, producer, director, and collector) proposes a personal selection of films on Thursday, November 9. Friday through Sunday, November 10-12, this year’s guest curator Matthieu Orléan (La Cinémathèque française) presents a screening programme featuring selected artist’s films and videos from exhibiting galleries.

The Tears of Things—the private collection of Helga De Alvear
Paris Photo is proud to welcome Spanish collector Helga de Alvear for a special exhibition curated by Marta Gili (director of the Jeu de Paume), featuring works by Allan Sekula, Chen Wei, Christian Marclay, Edward Ruscha, Frank Thiel, Gordon Matta-Clark, Helena Almeida, James Casebere, Rodney Graham, Thomas Demand, Thomas Ruff, among others.

The Platform Conversations
Experimental forum, the platform proposes a cycle of conversation with leading figures in the field including artists, curators, historians, filmmakers and critics. This 2017 programme is organised by David Campany (writer, curator, artist), Mouna Mekouar (independant curator) and Cristiano Raimondi (Head of Development & International Projects, Nouveau Musée National de Monaco) with participants including Harry Gruyaert, Joel Meyerowitz, Roe Ethridge, Alfredo Jaar, Francesco Zanot, Susan Meiselas…

Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards
The PhotoBook Awards celebrate the book’s contribution to the evolving narrative of photography. The winners for categories: 1st PhotoBook (10,000 USD prize), PhotoBook of the year, Photography Catalogue of the Year, will be announced at Paris Photo Friday, November 10, at 1pm. The shortlisted titles will be presented in the 6th edition of The Photobook Review and exhibited at the fair.

Carte Blanche—students at the Gare du Nord
This October, 4 students selected from over 50 European Art schools are given carte blanche at the Gare du Nord train station. Congratulations to Alexey Shlyk (Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp, Belgium), George Selley (College of Communication, University of the Arts London, UK), Leon Billerbeck (Bauhaus University Weimar, Germany), and William Lakin (Middlesex University, UK). The students will also take part in a round table discussion and expose their projects at the fair.

Paris Photo joins Radio Nova to bring words to images
Weekdays from October 20 through November 8, Radio Nova is airing segments with leading figures in photography as they give form to images through words. Follow the programme and discover the artworks from Paris Photo’s PRISMES sector as they are revealed online.

The Artists talks by The Eyes
The Eyes Magazine presents a program of intimate 15-minute talks engaging the public in three 45-minute daily sessions dedicated to the photographic object and its author with Alec Soth, Paul Graham, among others.

BMW presents, winner of the BMW Residency BMW Art & Culture, Dune Varela, Always the Sun, with a project focusing on landscapes and their representation. Spanning timeframes, she ponders the fragility of the photographic medium with pictures extracted from the collections of the Nicéphore Niépce Museum, the Internet, and her own photographs.
