Mwangi Hutter : Circling Around Oneness

An exhibition by Mwangi Hutter in the context of POW (Post-Otherness-Wedding), curated by Solvej Helweg Ovesen und Dr. Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung

Mwangi Hutters’ exhibition Circling Around Oneness focuses on unity, a longterm subject of their artistic collaboration as an artist duo in a process to constantly form a unity anew. They see the creation of oneness as a process of getting close, uniting and distancing oneself from one another. A whole, oneness must be created over and over again. Therefore, this is a circular movement.

Oneness. Oneness, a unity of two, as in love, as in a family, as in joining two otherwise separate, yet complementary parts or positions. As in the unity of humans and God, or holistically as in the unity between me and the rest of the world, between people of different descent. On a communicative, emotional basis? How is it constituted and how is it happening on a daily basis? How can we understand and attempt oneness in a world of individualism, of generic race and gender conflicts, or in a world focussed merely on difference?

These themes are central in the two video works that Mwangi Hutter present at Galerie Wedding (The Act of Leaving the Body and Nothing Solid, both 2015), that reflect on the performative and collective nature of the duo’s endeavour, as they also involve themselves as performers as well as one of their daughters. In the installation the black and white colour sprayed window facade of the gallery takes up the signature of Mwangi Hutter – the colour combination of black and white connoting difference, opposition, exchange between people from different origins. As it turns out, the colour sprayed facade of Galerie Wedding is not a blocking, but a permeable surface; the black and white chalk is easily washed away from outside. Looking inside one sees the projection of a man and a woman who are resting on their separate beds.
