Duties and Responsibilities
The Department of History of Art is seeking to appoint three full-time Lecturers in Art and Visual Cultures of the Global South to begin on or before 1 September 2020. These new posts represent an exciting opportunity to enhance the diversity and inclusivity of the Department’s teaching and research. Appointing three specialists in the art and visual cultures of the Global South will enable UCL History of Art to further its aim to expand and decentre the curriculum, to integrate teaching on artistic production beyond the western tradition, and to support its commitment to advancing global understanding and cross-cultural awareness within the discipline.

The main purpose of the jobs will be:

• To deliver a range of research-based teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level in relevant fields.
• To contribute to team-taught modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
• To take on an appropriate share of the administrative work of the Department and of UCL.
• To generate research income by actively pursuing and applying for research grants.

Key Requirements
The successful candidates will have a record of engagement with the art and visual cultures of one or more regions in the Global South (broadly defined, but including regions in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, the Americas, Oceania and the Caribbean). They will have a relevant Ph.D. and a track record of publications and research excellence in their field.

The UCL is looking to attract suitable applicants from Art History and related disciplines such as Film and Media Studies, Cultural Geography, Visual Anthropology, Visual Culture Studies, Performance Studies, Architecture, Aesthetics and Art Theory. UCL seeks candidates from a broad range of period specialisms and with interests in innovative conceptual approaches, who are able to connect their areas of expertise to larger intellectual and methodological frameworks

The department is particularly interested in scholars who engage in critical debates around racism and racialisation; migration and diaspora; cross-cultural and cross-regional interactions; ecologies and environmental politics; architecture and spatial politics. While UCL is open to applicants from a broad range of disciplines, they want to attract those whose work centres on visual and aesthetic questions and who are excited about integrating their research into an art history department.
