Katherine Spindler : Selah

Katherine Spindler, Attend, 2015, Oil on canvas

Barnard Gallery presents Selah, an exhibition of works by Katherine Spindler. Although not the artist’s first solo show it is her first with the gallery and the first exhibition of her paintings.

The meaning of the word ‘selah’ is somewhat uncertain. Situated in the Book of Psalms ‘selah’ is thought by some to be a liturgical-musical mark or instruction on the reading of the text; the purpose of the word’s presence is to encourage a reader, a singing voice, to ‘pause and reflect’. Poignant, powerfully evocative and at times nostalgic Katherine’s paintings encourage moments of stasis and reflection – a certain ‘listening’.

Katherine completed both her BAFA (2004) and MFA (2011) with distinction at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town as well as her PGCE (2005) from the same institution. She currently lectures part-time in drawing and printmaking at the Michaelis School of Fine Art and is also a teacher at Bishops Diocesan College on a part-time basis.

The artist’s first solo exhibition, entitled At Sea, was shown at Commune.1 in Cape Town in 2011. Her work has since been included in a number of group exhibitions including, amongst others Picture & Paper (Barnard Gallery, 2015), Then & Now: Conversations in Time (Barnard Gallery, 2015), Surface: Emerging Painters (Barnard Gallery, 2015), Paint Matters (Barnard Gallery, 2014) and Cross-Currents (David Krut Projects, 2012).
