The new Circle Art Gallery opens to the public on 26th March at 910 James Gichuru Road, Lavington, Nairobi, Kenya.

The gallery aims to be the foremost exhibition space in East Africa, exhibiting carefully curated, challenging and thought-provoking contemporary art and providing a venue for presentations from local and international artists, curators and art collectors.

There is huge demand for a purpose built gallery space in Kenya to show new, exciting art from the region. African art collectors are increasingly interested in East Africa. Since 2013, Circle has held 2 highly successful Modern and Contemporary East African Art auctions, grossing Ksh 37.3 million and 3 pop-up exhibitions showing over 120 artists and selling an average of 80% on each opening night. This month, they showed the work of 6 artists at the Cape Town Art Fair for the first time, receiving much praise from visitors and selling over half the art exhibited.

The first exhibition in the Circle Art Gallery is entitled ‘Concerning the Internal’ and runs from 26 March – 19 April 2015.

It features 18 artists from Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania chosen for their diverse interrogation of profoundly personal, internal concerns. Media includes video, installation, painting and drawing that reflect each artist’s innermost thoughts, experiences or desires.

Over-arching narratives depicting shared human experiences are counter-balanced by intimate, personal stories. What brings the work together is its ability to draw the viewer into a thoughtful space, and allow an insight into the artists’ most personal stories.
