This is a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on the institutional and architectural transformation of an institution of international caliber, located in the heart of Canada’s largest cultural hub, Montreal’s Place des Arts.

It is in this effervescent context that, reporting directly to the Director and Chief Curator, you will take on responsibility for the museum’s administration and operations as a whole, managing both daily affairs as well as contributing to building the MAC’s future.

TERMS OF REFERENCE

More precisely, the Deputy Director will supervise the following departments: Finance and IT, Collections and documentary resources, HR, Marketing, communications and Visitor Experience, as well as directly manage Security services and the various building sites. The Deputy Director will also be responsible for directing, supervising and organising all activities linked with the ongoing architectural transformation project.

Through rigorous planning, analysis, and supervision, the Deputy Director participates in strategic planning of the Museum’s orientations during this pivotal period in its history, as its major transformation project begins, and participates in the implementation of the objectives defined in all of the sectors under his or her guidance.

The Deputy Director directs the management of operations for the Museum as a whole by improving performance and encouraging efficiency in all departments; he or she oversees institutional and governmental partnerships, as well as Museum governance.
He or she must provide Museum senior management with the strategic information necessary for effective, efficient, and economical management of its operations and development. He or she participates in management of the Museum as an active member of the steering committee and ensures that the orientations and strategic objectives defined with the Director and Chief Curator are complied with and executed.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Governance and general secretariat

  • Works in close collaboration with the board of directors, its committees, and the Director and Chief Curator, as well as the steering committee, to formulate the Museum’s orientations, strategies, and objectives.
  • Ensures the formulation and achievement of the Museum’s sectorial action plans.
  • Provides liaison with the appropriate governmental authorities.
  • Supervises all of the Museum’s calls for tenders and follows up on the orientations retained.
  • Actively participates in formulating the corporate plan and the annual report.

Archive and collection management

  • Ensure that the orientations and operational objectives defined by the Collections and Information Resources Manager are respected and are in line with the Museum’s strategic orientations.

MAC transformation project and relocation of the museum’s activities and personnel

  • Defines, with the various project stakeholders, the strategy and general plan for accomplishment of the transformation project.
  • Ensures that the orientations and objectives related to the MAC transformation project comply with the execution schedule for the work, the specifications, and the established budget.
  • Ensures effective communications and cooperation among all stakeholders involved in the Museum’s real estate projects.

Management of financial and material resources and information technologies:

  • Ensures that the orientations and operational objectives defined by the Chief of Finance are respected and are appropriate to the Museum’s strategic orientations.

Management of buildings

  • Writes and manages the different budgets required for maintenance of the buildings.
  • Manages application of the asset maintenance plan for the buildings and their equipment.
  • Ensures compliance with provincial and municipal norms regarding building safety and follows up with personnel.
  • Oversees the different activities involved in management, maintenance, and work related to the buildings, energy systems, and purchase or rental of goods and services, and authorizes payments for these.
  • Ensures management of the sustainable development program within the Museum in compliance with the norms and policies of the Sustainable Development Act.

Management of commercial activities

  • Participates in formulation of strategies to ensure the development of the fund for the Museum’s commercial activities.
  • Participates in the negotiation of agreements with commercial partners.
  • Maintains good relations with the commercial partners.

Security management

  • Formulates and manages the different budgets required for safety activities.
  • Oversees and monitors security contracts and authorizes payments.
  • Ensures compliance with provincial and municipal building safety standards and follows up with personnel.
  • Assesses human resources needs to ensure the safety of the site, people, and artworks, and supervises the service personnel.

Human resources management

  • Ensures that the orientations and operational objectives defined by the Human Resources Department are respected and are related to the Museum’s strategic orientations.

Marketing and communications management

  • In concert with the Director and Chief Curator, ensures that the orientations and operational objectives defined by the Chief of marketing and communications are respected and are related to the Museum’s strategic orientations.

Administrative management

  • Defines, in concert with the Director and Chief Curator, the orientations and operational objectives in relation to his or her sectors.
  • Participates actively in all special projects, including the Museum’s site and digital shift, the transformation project, and other strategic portfolios.
  • Upon request, represents the Museum with interlocutors and with public and private bodies and maintains close ties with the state’s governmental authorities and administrative apparatus, especially the Ministère de la culture, des communications and the Société de la Place des Arts.
  • Participates in meetings of the audit and verification committee, the governance and human resources committee, the building advisory committee, and other committees as applicable.
  • Formulates and prepares institutional documents such as policies, standards, procedures, and directives related to his or her fields of activity and ensures follow-up and updating.
  • Assists the Director and Chief Curator with formulating the different documents requested by the Conseil du Trésor, the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications, and the Bureau du Vérificateur général du Québec.

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, art history, museology, or another relevant field
  • Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline an asset

Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years’ varied and multifaceted management experience acquired in both the private and public administration sectors
  • Strong experience with managing government grant programs and with relations with provincial civil service departments, notably the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications and the Conseil du Trésor
  • Experience in operation management, including solid experience in human resources management, financial management, and good knowledge of facility management
  • Experience in a unionized workplace
  • Have pertinent accomplishments to his or her credit

SALARY CONDITIONS: According to the salary scale in effect for management level 630

  • Class 1 of the salary scale for supervisory personnel of the Gouvernement du Québec
