Art Basel returns this week for its 13th edition to Miami Beach.

More that 200 leading international galleries drawn from 31 countries across North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa show artworks ranging from Modern masters,  to contemporary art and newly created pieces by emerging stars.

In addition many galleries will present works outside of the halls as part of Art Basel’s Public and Film sectors. Further highlights include Art Basel’s talks series and the staging of Ryan McNamara’s ME?M 4 Miami: A Story Ballet About the Internet at the Miami Grand Theater.

PROGRAMME:

Paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs, films, and editioned works of the highest quality are on display at the main exhibition hall, while ambitious artworks and performances become part of the landscape at nearby beaches, Collins Park and SoundScape Park.

Film 

Organized in association with David Gryn, Director of London?s Artprojx, the Film sector presents a dynamic program of films by and about artists. Screenings take place at the outdoor setting of SoundScape Park, where works are shown on the 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall of the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center; and inside the Miami Beach Convention Center. In addition, Zurich film connoisseur This Brunner selects a feature length film for a special screening at the Colony Theatre. Film will comprise over 80 films and video works by artists including Charles Atlas, Martin Creed, Susan Hiller, Parker Ito, Mark Leckey, Babette Mangolte, Takeshi Murata, Laure Prouvost, Alex Prager, Mark Wallinger, and Harun Farocki, selected by David Gryn of London’s Artprojx. Public

Nicholas Baume, Director and Chief Curator of Public Art Fund, returns for his second year curating Art Basel’s Public sector. Under the theme Fieldwork, Public will transform Miami Beach’s Collins Park into an outdoor exhibition space with 26 large-scale and site-specific installations by leading and emerging artists from 13 countries. Produced in partnership with the Bass Museum of Art for the fourth consecutive year, the sector will include work by Georg Baselitz, Lynda Benglis, Matthias Bitzer, Sarah Braman, Ana Luiza Dias Batista, Sam Ekwurtzel, Elmgreen & Dragset, Faivovich & Goldberg, Nuria Fuster, Ryan Gander, Jeppe Hein, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, Alfredo Jaar, Gunilla Klingberg, Jose Carlos Martinat, Justin Matherly, Olaf Metzel, Sam Moyer, Ernesto Neto, Ugo Rondinone, Nancy Rubins, Yinka Shonibare MBE, Jessica Stockholder, Barthélémy Toguo, Tatiana Trouvé, and Hank Willis Thomas with Ryan Alexiev and Jim Ricks.

The sector has been produced in collaboration with the Bass Museum of Art since 2011.


Conversations and Salon
 

Art Basel hosts a series of conversations and talks on a range of subjects, including the collection and exhibition of art, understanding art from a geographical and historical perspective, and timely topics concerning the contemporary art scene. Artists, gallerists, art historians, curators, museum directors, publishers, and collectors participate in panel discussions, book signings, and interviews.

In Conversations, Dynamic dialogs take place between prominent members of the international artworld, each offering their unique perspective on producing, collecting and exhibiting art. Conversations, which is supported by Absolut, takes place daily from Thursday, December 4, to Sunday, December 7, 10am to 11.30am. Talks from the Conversations program are free to the public.
The afternoon programme Salon, is an open platform for short presentations – often informal – such as artist talks, panels, lectures and performances with a range of speakers including artists, curators, academics, collectors, architects, art lawyers, critics and other cultural players. Salon runs every afternoon from Thursday, December 4, to Sunday, December 7. Art Basel entry tickets include admission to Salon talks.

Participating artists include: Marina Abramovi?, Nicholas Baume, Lynda Benglis, Klaus Biesenbach, Claire Bishop, Simon de Pury, Liu Ding, Ella Fontanals-Cisneros, Ryan Gander, Mario García Torres, Massimiliano Gioni, Nicolás Goldberg, Chrissie Iles, Joseph Kosuth, Pablo León de la Barra, Ryan McNamara, Pedro Reyes, Martha Rosler, Julian Schnabel, Kevin Systrom, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Amalia Ulman, Shen Wei and Martha Wilson.

Art Basel’s talks program takes place in Hall C auditorium of the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Ryan McNamara 

Celebrated contemporary artist Ryan McNamara will stage ME?M 4 Miami: A Story Ballet About the Internet, a choreographic exploration of the online world. The work is a Performa Commission, presented by Art Basel, and produced by Performa and Art Basel. It will take place at 8pm and 10:30pm on Wednesday, December 3 and Thursday, December 4, with a by-invitation performance on Tuesday, December 2 at Miami Grand Theater (the former Playboy theater) at Castle Beach Resort, 5445 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida.
