Gallery of African Art (GAFRA), London, United Kingdom
25 Jul 2014 - 30 Aug 2014
The Gallery of African Art (GAFRA) presents a summer group exhibition of works by artists from the African continent and its Diaspora. Spread across two floors, the exhibition features paintings, drawings and sculptural installations from renowned African modernists and contemporary practitioners. Drawing inspiration from African folklore, mythology, history, religious iconography, language and their personal environments, these artists have produced works that reveal the visual and cultural richness of the African continent.
Most of the artists shown still live and work in Africa, and the selected works reflect the diversity of artistic practice on the continent. For those artists who have remained in Africa, the intimate connection with their homeland has enabled insightful comments and observations on the social, economic and political realities of modern Africa. For African artists practicing outside of the continent, their experiences as expatriates have provided a fertile source for exploration and experimentation.
Artists included in this exhibition are: Bruce Onobrakpeya (NGR), Wosene Worke Kosrof (ETH), Hassan Musa (SUD), Malangatana (MOZ), Victor Ehikhamenor (NGR), Nyemike Onwuka (NGR), Beatrice Wanjiku (KEN), Bertiers (KEN), Anthony Okello (KEN), Fitsum Berhe (KEN), Peter Elungat (KEN), Isaac Azaly (MDG), AMBI (MDG) and Temandrota (MDG).
