Registered in 2012, 32° East is a centre for the creation and exploration of contemporary Ugandan art. Based in Kabalagala, Kampala, it provides the artistic community with tools and resources to support their work.

Job Title: Interim Director
Reporting to: Board of Directors
Location: 32° East, Kabalagala, Kampala
Contract: Fixed Term to end 10th October 2026
Start Date: End of September/Early October 2025

Over recent years, 32° East has:

  • Hosted over 100 artists in residence
  • Engaged over 10,000 members of the public through the public arts festival KLA ART
  • Built a network of over 50 arts organisations worldwide
  • Facilitated international exchanges in over 21 countries

In 2021, 32° East began construction on the first purpose-built art centre in Kampala, providing artists with world-class facilities for their work. The innovative ecological design from New Makers Bureau will have a library, 6 artists studios, a cafe and art shop, workshop space, accommodation and a gallery.

32° East is a registered company limited by guarantee in Uganda. 32° East is a member of Arts Collaboratory and the Triangle Network.

Job Description
While 32° East’s Director is on study leave, 32° East is seeking an Interim Director to support the organisation through this period, by overseeing day-to-day activities, successfully sourcing new funding opportunities and keeping the organisation stable. The Interim Director will ideally have a 30-45 day transition period with our outgoing Director. The Interim Director will have the guidance and support of the 32° East Board and staff for their entire tenure

The role requires that the Interim Director reports to and works closely with the Board of Directors. The Interim Director should be able to represent 32° East, successfully develop the ongoing work of 32° East and promote the organisation’s visibility. This job description is a guide to the nature of the work required of the 32° East Interim Director.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the formal link between the Board and staff
  • Work with the Management Team to lead the organization
  • Fulfill administrative tasks and attend to day-to-day tasks as needed within the Interim Director role
  • Conduct an evaluation of the 3 year strategic plan

Fundraising and Reporting:

  • Work with the fundraising advisory committee and 32° East staff to ensure adequate levels of funding from diverse sources e.g. donors, businesses, individuals, to meet 32° East’s programme and operational needs;
  • Consolidate donor narratives and financial reporting according to each donor’s schedule and contract;
  • Attend local art events where possible to nurture connections with local arts organisations;
  • Ensure appropriate grant applications are drafted, completed and submitted to relevant funders;
  • Ensure all donor requirements are met including partnership details and contracts;

Management and Delivery:

  • Work with finance to oversee, monitor alignment with, and revise 32° East’s organizational budget, as needed;
  • Continuously monitor appropriate financial, human resources and operational policies and procedures for the Board of Directors’ approval;
  • Ensure financial accountability, transparency and integrity;
  • Work with the Board of Directors to ensure good governance of 32° East;
  • Facilitate the presentation of progress, financial, and other operational reports to the Board by relevant team members.
  • Oversee the implementation of 32° East’s annual work plan;
  • Engage with visiting artists by visiting studios, providing links and contacts;

Communications and Audience Development:

  • Promote 32° East to all stakeholders, including artists, arts organisations and the public, both locally and internationally, to develop and maintain a strong a credible public image;
  • Represent 32° East’s interests both nationally and internationally;

Experience and Background Required:
Essential

  • A proven track record of fundraising;
  • At least 3 years work experience in a project management role;
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the Ugandan, East African and International art scene;
  • Experience of working in partnership with diverse organisations and/or peer networks;
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal;
  • Recognised leadership and management experience, demonstrated ability to build and develop a strong operational team;

Desirable

  • Experience of working in/or with an arts organization;
  • Experience of working directly with artists, supporting them in the development of their research or the creation of new work;
  • Demonstrated interest in process-based artistic practice;

  • Hours of work: Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:30pm, some attendance of evening events will be required, compensated by time off in lieu.
