The Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven is looking for a curatorial assistant for temporary exhibitions.

Ever since its foundation in 1936, the Van Abbemuseum has been raising questions in the field of art and society in an experimental way, applying art as a tool. Openness, hospitality and exchange of knowledge are important to the Van Abbemuseum and it encourages to think about subjects such as, for example, the role of the collection as a cultural memory or the museum as a public space. Thanks to international collaborations and exchange, the Van Abbemuseum has also become a place for creative cross-pollination. A source of wonderment, inspiration and imagination. The Van Abbemuseum is one of the foremost museums of contemporary art in Europe. It has an extensive international collection of more than 3200 works of art, from both well-known contemporary artists such as Tania Bruguera, Marlene Dumas and Iris Kensmil and modern masters such as Oskar Kokoschka, Piet Mondriaan and Pablo Picasso.

As a curatorial assistant you will be contributing to the following projects

  • Supporting curators Nick Aikens and Yolande Zola Zoli van der Heide and project team on organising the upcoming group exhibitions: a solo exhibition with Sung Hwan Kim one of the seminal artists of his generation, working across video and installation and research work toward Positions, an exhibition series at the Van Abbemuseum that brings artists into dialogue with one another
  • Assisting the curators, artists and project team in both the content and production of the exhibitions;
  • Assisting, in collaboration with the curators, in realising research projects within the context of the Van Abbemuseum’s current exhibitions and research policy;
  • Assisting in providing visual and textual materials for marketing, communication, mediation and education projects and editing publications for exhibitions, projects and research.

Who will you work with?

You will be part of the team of conservators, production, artists and collaborators that are involved in the preparation and organization of upcoming exhibitions.

Your profile?

  • You are a recent graduate / early in your career and want to pursue a career in curating;
  • You have some past (intern) experience in developing and realizing exhibitions in an international museum context;
  • You live in (the vicinity of) Eindhoven or are willing to move. You are expected to be physically present in the museum for a large part of your hours;
  • You have up-to-date knowledge of developments in modern and contemporary art;
  • You have knowledge of current artistic and societal discourse with regard to
    demodern, feminist intersectional practice or are invested in equitable ways of being
    together;
  • You have excellent written and spoken Dutch and English language skills;
  • You are able to demonstrate how the programme and priorities of the Van
    Abbemuseum programme aligns with your interests;
  • You are enthusiastic and open to learn!

The Van Abbemuseum is part of the municipality of Eindhoven and is known for its pleasant and informal atmosphere within the organization. The team consists of committed and passionate specialists and attaches great importance to good cooperation and hospitality.

  • A 1-year, 28-hour/week freelance contract with specific obligations
  • A rate of around 30 euros/hour (this amount may vary by 10-20% depending
    on your experience);
  •  Compensation for travelling by public transport (if you live at least 10km away from
    the Museum). Living in the Eindhoven region is encouraged;
  • Possibility to attend lectures/symposiums for professional development;
  • Realising a personal and professional development plan with your direct teams
    members;
  • Participating in internal strategic meetings and learn the dynamics of the museum.
