Sematsatsa Library and Constitutional Hill invite you to the first of many iterations of the « That’s What She Said » Exhibition. The exhibition is inspired by a series of interviews with female artists from cities such as Johannesburg, Amsterdam and Cape Town. The exhibition which will be curated by Siya Cweba.

Building up to the exhibition, talks curator, Palesa Segomotso Motsumi, has been collaborating with the Bag Factory Artist Studios on a series of talks with female writers, curators, Arts practitioners and artists to create a framework for discussion on archiving, the Visual Arts landscape, the curatorial space, blackness, creativity and womanhood.

That’s What She Said will create not only a temporary community of witnesses; it will also result in an archive of women’s narratives. Today, women are interested in hearing about other women talking about women’s issues. Historically, there has been little space provided for women to share with each other; to fully express themselves without judgment or criticism.

Storytelling is a skill that an artist exercises in creating works of Art which transcend language, culture and geographical boundaries. Through this exhibition, its also acknowledge that the Visual Arts space requires a process – It is a balance between the vision of the story in one’s mind and the attempt to capture that through works of creativity.

That’s What She Said is an exhibition comprising of strong messages from female voices who have worked within the South African context and landscape. The exhibition has been inspired by a series of in – depth interviews with various female Arts Practitioners who have been at the helm in changing and amplifying the Visual Arts landscape in South Africa.

The exhibition will take place at Constitutional Hill from 29 August 2019, running to 19 September 2019.
