Tate, London, United Kingdom
30 Jun 2015
This exciting new position offers the chance to play a leading role in the building of Tate’s growing collection of non-Western art and to promote programmes which visibly widens Tate Modern’s geographic remit. You will provide strategic leadership and management to help Tate fulfill its ambition of rethinking the history of modern and contemporary art from a less Western-centric vantage point.
Tate’s mission is to increase the public’s knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of art, and its collection of world class art is at the heart of its mission. Since its opening in 2000, Tate Modern’s programme of major temporary exhibitions, collection displays, projects and commissions have developed in diversity, international scope and profile.
You will contribute to all aspects of Tate Modern’s programme including research, exhibitions and acquisitions. You will oversee and support regional acquisitions committees from Asia, the Middle East and Africa. You will also be a leading voice on strategy for representing art from these regions across the programme at Tate Modern, widening the geographic scope. Travel within the region will be a key feature of the role.
You will be an experienced curator or specialist with an in-depth knowledge of modern and contemporary art of South Asia and/or the Middle East supported by a relevant post-graduate degree. An impressive track record of publication and research, an established network of contacts and an understanding of the issues surrounding collecting modern and contemporary art for museums will be essential. You will also be a first class communicator who can write for a variety of audiences.
