Tate calls for applications for the fourth edition of Tate Intensive, Tate Intensive: The Case for Action, a rich and dynamic programme exploring the need for imaginative change within art galleries and museums.

Art galleries and museums around the world face momentous change in all directions. What kind of change does this require within institutions? How might we imagine a different set of institutional values? Brought together in a spirit of exchange and collaboration, Tate Intensive participants are invited to contribute in an open and generous way to peer-led discussions and activities, drawing on their own experiences and case studies, to explore new ways of thinking and working. The week offers a vital space for critical reflection and the opportunity to develop fresh perspectives and new skills for driving change.

The programme includes intimate talks with museum professionals, artists and cultural leaders, and workshop sessions attended by members of Tate staff from different departments across the institution. Daily engagement with art includes visits to exhibitions and displays at Tate Modern and Tate Britain and other London cultural institutions. Evening social activities complement the intense discussions held in the Tate Exchange space at Tate Modern.

Participants

Tate Intensive comprises 25 selected participants from around the world. Past participants have included administrators, curators, researchers, writers, educators, producers, programmers, artists, architects, fundraisers, activists and strategists. We are actively seeking a diverse range of professionals working in and with art galleries, museums and other cultural institutions in a wide range of countries.

The programme intentionally brings together people at different stages of their career – from emerging practitioners to directors and others in senior management roles. This intimate group is encouraged to share knowledge and exchange ideas based on their diverse experiences and current practices, and to discuss creative approaches to curating, programming, research, audience development, community engagement and arts management. Participants join an ongoing network of alumni offering support, inspiration and the potential for future collaborations.

Programme

The Tate Intensive 2019 programme is shaped around two central activities in relation to art, its audiences, and museums and galleries today. Firstly, participants will work together to generate new possibilities for their respective practices and institutional policies, undertaking the challenging but vital task of imagining alternative futures. Secondly, the group will learn, share and test the skills and strategies needed to make change, moving from imagination and critique towards action and transformation.

Key questions shaping the programme include:

How can different curatorial and programming approaches tell new stories about historic collections or address inclusive histories of art and society?
How can artists, institutions, communities and audiences collaborate in more creative ways?
What conceptual tools can museums and galleries adapt from other disciplines and sectors to create transformative change?
How might a more inclusive, imaginative and sustainable vision for museums and galleries emerge from existing resources?
What can be learned from failed projects?

Previous keynote speakers on the Tate Intensive programme have included Maria Balshaw, Anne Barlow, Alex Farquharson, Jane Finnis, Ryan Gander, Isaac Julien, Karen MacKinnon, Frances Morris, Farshid Moussavi, Cornelia Parker, Nicholas Serota, Justine Simons, Fatoş Üstek, and Jenny Waldman.

Fees, travel and accommodation

The programme costs £1500, which includes lunch and refreshments during the six days. Participants are required to pay their own travel costs to and from London, as well as accommodation and all other expenses.

A number of full and partial bursaries covering course fees, travel and accommodation are available and will be awarded on merit. Applicants who wish to be considered for a bursary should include an additional statement (max. 500 words) with their application, outlining how the Tate Intensive programme would contribute to their professional development.

Application process

There are no formal entry requirements, though we strongly recommend that applicants have at least two years’ experience working with or in an art gallery, museum or related cultural institution. Applications close at 12.00 (GMT) on 29 November 2018. Interviews for shortlisted candidates will take place between 7 January and 28 February 2019. Successful candidates will be informed by the end of February 2019.

Applicants are asked to submit the following information:

CV summarising your professional experience and skills (max. 2 pages)
Short statement (max. 500 words) explaining why you would like to participate in Tate Intensive, and how the key questions of the 2019 programme relate to your practice
Short description (max. 500 words) of a project you have been involved in, and why it was important for your practice or institution.
