Call for applications

Open call 2022: a time for connection and collaboration

Association for Visual Arts, Cape Town, South Africa
Deadline: 31 July 2021

Open call 2022: a time for connection and collaboration

Calling all curators and artists. In the process of rebuilding and reshaping the world around us, the call looks to encourage collaboration and cooperation amongst artists and curators.

In 2021 Ava ran its first series of ArtReach Conscious Curating Co-productions, which is a successful continuation of our 170-year tradition of supporting exhibitions that promote the discursive and experimental nature of contemporary art. This year’s call for exhibitions in 2022 encourages curators and artists to propose group exhibitions* that explore collaboration and cooperation in different ways, opening up space for inclusive and engaging conversations.

Since working towards publishing five decades of AVA archives, there is a special interest in exhibition proposals that activate archives.

*There is limited space for solo exhibitions. Preference will be given to group exhibitions.

The application process

Fill out the application form in full on the website. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

All applications will be reviewed by the selection committee in August.
Successful applicants will be published online by 1 September.

Costs to consider

At the AVA there are 3 different galleries; Main (92m2), Long (30m2), and Mezzanine (36m2), and a room for audio/visual art work.

Depending on which gallery space you prefer, there is a facilitation fee payable. This fee includes gallery space for a period of + 5 weeks, installation of the exhibition, marketing, and administration and management for the duration of the exhibition.

Main gallery: R6 000

Long gallery: R4 500

Mezzanine gallery: R3 500

New Media room: R1 500

You will need to indicate in your proposal in which gallery you imagine installing your exhibition. The members of the selection committee will do their best to accommodate your choice, but final placement depends on programming.

Applying for support

In line with our ArtReach Conscious Curating Co-production programme, piloted in 2021, we offer support to curators and artists applying for GROUP EXHIBITIONS again this year. Successful applicants will be invited to negotiate a co-production package with us that may include aspects of marketing, programming, artist liaison, partnerships or fundraising.

To apply for support, please complete the ArtReach Co-production support section on the application form.
