The Magnum Foundation plays an influential role in the global documentary photography community as a grant maker, thought leader, and key collaborator for photographers critically engaged with a range of issues. With strategic partnerships and targeted distribution, we promote creativity, rigor, and diverse voices in the field to seed new models of documentary practice and create possibilities for lasting impact on pressing social issues.

Through this pilot initiative Magnum Foundation is seeking to support photographers to partner with other creative practitioners to produce in-depth and experimental projects on religion.

Magnum Foundation believes that photographers working in partnership with other creative practitioners will produce uniquely effective and experimental storytelling that will further awareness and understanding. The interdisciplinary storytelling that will be supported will expand our knowledge of the politically significant and vastly complex ways that religion impacts our lives. It will also produce projects that demonstrate creative new approaches to visual storytelling and collaborative creative work. Selected projects will receive production grants, participate in an innovation laboratory, and receive distribution support.

Each Project team will receive a production grant of up to $18,000.

Proposals are due July 12, 2016.

The Magnum Foundation is working with The Revealer: A Review of Religion and Media, NYU’s Center for Media Culture and History, and The Brown Institute for Media Innovation at Columbia University’s School of Journalism.  Support for this pilot initiative is generously provided by the The Henry Luce Foundation, which seeks to bring important ideas to the center of American life, strengthen international understanding, and foster innovation and leadership in academic, policy, religious, and art communities.

The project development laboratory will take place in New York City on October 20-22. The lab will focus on collaboration and will be an opportunity to connect with our advisory team, experts in the field, and creative technologists for guided project development sessions. Grantees will be required to attend the two-day lab and participants will receive financial support for housing and travel to New York.
