Omenka Gallery, Lagos, Nigeria
03 Oct 2015 - 24 Oct 2015
From October 3 to 24, 2015, Omenka Gallery will present Magic, a joint exhibition of new drawings on paper and collaborative drawing performance by leading contemporary artists ruby amanze and Wura-Natasha Ogunji.
The two artists redefine how drawing fits into a global contemporary art composition while pushing the boundaries, and seeking intersections where these separate genres overlap and intermingle.
What brings them together in this exhibition is their critical outlook towards the condition of being in transit between places with different languages, customs, material culture and ideas. This ‘in-betweeness’ begins with a critical challenge and an attempt to break it down to locate their own position. They use this resulting rubble of meanings to construct their own story with new historical and conceptual connections. With a degree of radical nihilism and self-irony, they scrutinize issues such as the politics of representation, travel, migration, homelessness, as well as dislocation.
This exhibition will be accompanied by a full-color catalogue with essays by Oliver Enwonwu [Omenka Gallery Director], Eva Langret [Curator, Tiwani Contemporary] and will also include conversations between amanze and Ogunji based on correspondences about drawing that they have engaged with for over two years.
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 3 , 4pm
