MoCADA presents Selections from Revelations, a photography series by Zimbabwean artist Kudzanai Chiurai.

Zimbabwean artist Kudzanai Chiurai critiques global mainstream media depictions of contemporary African continental politics with a photographic series that traces the rise of a fictitious African leader through a satirical lens.

The scenes are densely layered with signifiers of post-colonial upheaval: oil containers, emptied liquor bottles, corporate branding; conspirators to the candidate’s corrupt campaign and bloodied casualties crowd each frame. Chiurai’s chaotic compositions result in flattened picture planes which distort the viewer’s depth perception, a visual effect that mirrors the monolithic and reductive representations of the continent as perpetuated in global mainstream news media.

Selections from Revelations is supported in part by public funds from The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) in partnership with The City Council, and private funds from Lambent Foundation and Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

Opening Reception: Saturday, October 17, 2015 | RSVP
