Jakarta Biennale 2017 call for curators

Launched as Pameran Seni Lukis Indonesia(Indonesian Painting Exhibition) 1974, Jakarta Biennale (JB) expanded its scope and became an international contemporary art event in 2009.

Has been focusing on collaborative and multidisciplinary art praxis ever since, the Biennale concerns itself with social and political issues that are vital and relevant to urbanites today: collectivism, ideological contestation in urban spaces, the tensions between the public and the private, environmental issues, urban-rural relationships, and citizen tactics.

For its 2015 edition, Jakarta Biennale held its main events not only in the capital’s Gudang Sarinah, but also in other Indonesian cities through a number of public interventions and community-based art projects. Expanding itself into the realm of knowledge production and exchange, the Biennale also held a series of symposia, publications, public educational programmes, and an academy. After putting its 2015 spotlight on Aceh and Makassar (South Sulawesi) to render the social cultural realities outside of Java island visible, the 2017 edition of JB is putting one of its foci on the Eastern parts of the archipelago.

Jakarta Biennale’s Curators Lab was also inaugurated in 2015, by inviting curators from different Indonesian cities and abroad, in order to provide a platform where unique collective and collaborative curatorial formats can be created for each of Jakarta Biennale editions. By the means of its Curators Lab, Jakarta Biennale 2017 is offering curatorial opportunities for those who are interested in developing their existing curatorial practice further by creating a collective dialogue between Indonesian cities and their Global counterparts.

A selection committee, with both Indonesian and international representatives, will select all submitted proposals in two stages: selection of written proposals, followed by interviews. The chosen curators will work as a team, from November 2016 until December 2017.

Guidelines:

– A minimal 5-year working experience in the field of art and culture is preferable.

– Institutional and organizational curatorial experiences are preferable.

– Submission of the following materials:

•Curatorial outlook, max. 1500 words, for proposed curatorial approaches for JB 2017. Outline explorations on different artistic programs and formats: including but not limited to exhibitions, public and educational programmes, research and artistic projects, symposia, publications, etc.

•Short biography mentioning artistic activities, curatorial projects, and institutional/organizational experiences.

•Documentation in the form of photographs, video clips, and web links, related to previous curatorial projects.
