Faena Art Prize 2016

Faena Art Center , Buenos Aires, Argentina
Deadline: 10 August 2016

Faena Art Prize 2016

FAENA ART invites international artists across disciplines to submit proposals for the Faena Prize, considered one of the most prestigious prizes in the Americas.

Art today has abandoned the notion that vision is reason’s vehicle of choice, and space is no longer the privileged model for experience. Under these circumstances, the concept of “duration” (la durée) has become fundamental in the effort to redefine time in a new way that acknowledges its heterogeneous nature. Traditional definitions imposed the homogeneity and reversibility of space upon a temporal dimension that became thus static and petrified in a falsely distinct and repetitive succession of past, present and future. Duration, instead, means “invention, creation of forms, continuous production of that which is entirely new”. Rethinking duration challenges us to reflect upon the boundaries of art today.

The fifth edition of the Faena Prize serves as a platform for reflecting on these questions and invites artists from all disciplines to rethink the space of Faena Art Center Buenos Aires from perspectives based on time and duration.

The 75,000 USD prize will be awarded to winning proposals for the creation of new site-sensitive work that engages with temporality and duration as prime materials while taking into account the specific context of Faena Art Center Buenos Aires.

The Jury :
Coordinated by Ximena Caminos (Faena Art Chair) / Carlos Basualdo (Keith L. and Katherine Sachs Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art) / Achim Borchardt-Hume (Director of Exhibitions at the Tate Modern) / Caroline Bourgeois (Curator of the François Pinault Foundation) / Jesús Fuenmayor (Curator) / Victoria Noorthoorn (Director of Museo de Arte Moderno Buenos Aires)

While maintaining the open call, this year’s prize will feature a Nominating Committee that will include curators and museum directors from around the world. These nominations will be anonymous and will be reviewed by the Faena Prize jury along with all open call submissions.

The Nominating Committee will include: curator Sonia Becce; Fernanda Brenner, Artistic Director PIVÔ, São Paulo; Rita González, curator LACMA, Los Angeles;Abdellah Karroum, Director Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha; Jessica Morgan, Director Dia Art Foundation, New York; Lucrecia Palacios, curator MALBA, Buenos Aires; Philippe Pirotte, Director Portikus and Biennale de Montréal 2016, andFranklin Sirmans, Director Pérez Art Museum Miami. The Nominating Committee will be coordinated by curator, Jesus Fuenmayor.

How to apply?
Artists from different fields and/or disciplines are invited to present projects: installations, performances, paintings, sculptures, photographs, works that include design and architecture, film or video pieces, etc.

The winning project will be presented at Faena Art Center Buenos Aires with the possibility of being adapted for Faena Forum Miami Beach. The goal is to summon multidisciplinary artists from across the world to imagine site-sensitive works, works that dialogue not only with the monumental architecture of the building but also with the cultural and urban conditions of our immediate surroundings. Again, our institutional mission in this edition is to explore time itself as a working material.

Applicants may download the terms and conditions, guidelines and sample files to prepare their proposals here.
