Gallery MOMO Cape Town presents the works by the South African artist, Dumile Feni, who captured the imagination of many viewers through his depictions of sorrow experienced by South Africans in the late 20th  century during Apartheid. Feni is described as the ‘Goya of the townships’, alluding to his ability in depicting the daily struggles experienced in South Africa during the Apartheid era.   In his work Dumile Feni references a similar working method to that of Spanish master, Francisco de Goya.

The exhibition will include both sculptures and drawings by the artist. Some of these works have not been viewed before in the public. Gallery MOMO is excited to be providing the Cape Town public an opportunity to view and engage with the works of this historically significant artist. As Chabani Manganyi elaborates: “There was no way of stopping him once he had made up his mind. He overcame the most extraordinary social, political and personal obstacles to leave South Africa and the world with an outstanding artistic legacy” (Manganyi, 2012:49)

The documentary film, “Zwelidumile” by Ramadan Suleman will be playing in the projection room throughout the duration of the exhibition.

Opening: Thursday 22 October to from 6pm onwards.
