Bildmuseet seeks a curator of exhibitions, a permanent full-time position in Umeå, Sweden. The final application date is February 6, 2023. Employment begins May 15, 2023 or by agreement.
Bildmuseet is one of Sweden’s foremost venues for international contemporary art and visual culture. The exhibitions are produced in collaboration with artists, museums and universities worldwide and often attract both national and international attention.
Housed in an acclaimed building at the Umeå Arts Campus, right next to the Umeå Academy of Fine Arts, Umeå Institute of Design, Umeå School of Architecture and UmArts Research Centre, Bildmuseet is a part of Umeå University – one of Sweden’s largest institutions of higher education with over 37000 students and 4,800 faculty and staff. This is a multifaced university where studies and research within the creative realm make up an important part of the university’s cornerstone.
Description and work duties
As curator at Bildmuseet, you will initiate, curate, manage and implement exhibitions, public programs and projects in consultation with Bildmuseet’s director and artistic leader. The work includes project management, budget responsibility including seeking external funds, producing texts and publications. In addition to exhibition production, you will be responsible for initiating and implementing public talks and events, as part of the events program.
Qualification requirements
They are looking for candidates with a university degree in art history, curating or equivalent, who have experience in curating and project management of exhibitions from one or more contemporary art institutions. You will have an international profile and a curatorial practice with international networks relevant for Bildmuseet’s programme. You will be used to independently initiating, running, and implementing exhibition projects, with experience in managing budgets and attracting external funding.
You will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and express yourself well in both speech and writing in the field of contemporary visual arts, with experience of communicating contemporary art to a wide range of audiences.
As a curator, you will work towards deadlines, which requires excellent time management, flexibility, and an ability to plan and organize your work successfully. You will be able to demonstrate that you have good co-operation and teamwork skills necessary for exhibition production.
Additional desired qualifications
A doctorate in art history, curatorial practice or equivalent will be a merit.

The position may be subject to probationary employment of 6 months.
The workplace is Umeå, Sweden.
The workplace language is Swedish and English, and those who speak English only are offered to attend the Swedish for Academics course at Umeå University.
Employment begins 15 May 2023 or by agreement.
