C& Critical Writing Workshop

Contemporary And (C&) facilitates a three-day Critical Writing Workshop for emerging art critics based in Dallas, Texas. It will take place at Dallas TRHT, 1349 Empire Central Suite 400 from 24 – 26 May 2023. The invitation is open to art writers in the early stages of their career.

The C& Critical Writing Workshop aims to 
• Facilitate the circulation of knowledge and experience among participants.
• Discuss arts reporting and critical writing practice particularly to attract a younger audience.
• Provide the tools of how to write reviews, comments and essays within a given timeframe.
• Mediate how to pitch topics to different media platforms.
• Give insights into the processes of editing.
• Link participants to a network of arts journalists contributing to C& with the possibility of publishing on C& online and other outlets.

Workshop Tutors 
Roberto Conduru is the Endowed Distinguished Professor of Art History at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Conduru’s research addresses modern and contemporary art and architecture in Brazil, with an emphasis on Afro-Brazilian art, as well as constructivist art and architecture. His interests also encompass global art history and current debates in the visual cultures of Latin America and the trans-Atlantic world. Conduru is the author of Pérolas Negras – Primeiros Fios (EdUERJ, 2013) and Arte Afro-Brasileira (C/Arte, 2007), and co-author of Arte no Brasil no Século XIX (Barléu, 2020) and Architecture Agouda au Bénin et au Togo (Edições Fotorio, 2016). Conduru has served as a curator on exhibitions including Quilombo do Rosário (Museu Bispo do Rosário Arte Contemporânea, Rio de Janeiro, 2018) and Incorporation—Afro-Brazilian Contemporary Art (Centrale Electrique, Brussels, 2011), and co-curator of Axé Bahia: The Power of Art in an Afro-Brazilian Metropolis (Fowler Museum UCLA, 2017) and Perles de Liberté—Bijoux Afro-Brésiliens (Grand Hornu Images, Hornu, 2011). He received a bachelor’s in architecture from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and a PhD in history from Universidade Federal Fluminense in Brazil.

Yina Jiménez Suriel is a curator and researcher with a master’s degree in visual studies. Her practice is an ongoing investigation into emancipation and the construction of imagination. She is the curator for The Current IV by TBA21-Academy, a three years research project entitled otras montañas, las que andan sueltas bajo el agua. She is Associate Editor of the magazine Contemporary And (C&) for Latin America and the Caribbean. Among the exhibitions she has curated are: Vehículos. Una revisión (2018) at Casa Quien (Dominican Republic); one month after being known in that island (2020) at the Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger (Switzerland) curated with the artist Pablo Guardiola and co-produced by Caribbean Art Initiative; and the first chapter of the research project de montañas submarinas el fuego hace islas (2022) at Pivô (Brazil) co-produced with Kadist. She was part of the summer season of 2022 in the residency program at the Delfina Foundation. She has collaborated in public programs and workshops at Beta Local, La Cresta, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Panamá, Uniarte, among others. She is part of the curatorial team for the section Opening at ArcoMadrid for the editions of 2023 and 2024. Yina has written for exhibition catalogues of the HEK-Haus der Elektronischen Künste, the Denver Museum of Art and the San Luis Obispo Museum, and on contemporary art and visual culture in publications such as Foam Magazine, Terremoto, Contemporary And, and Revista de Arte de la UNAM. Yina lives and works in the Dominican Republic.

• Have first journalistic/writing experiences in the cultural field. Senior writers with long-term experience will not be accepted.
• Be interested in a focus on visual arts.
• Be fluent in written and spoken English or Spanish
