PIASA, Paris, France
17 Nov 2016
After the unanimous critical acclaim that greeted the works shown at the 1:54 fairs in London and New York, and at the AKAA fair in Paris, PIASA’s second Origins & Trajectories sale will be held towards the end of a particularly busy year for African contemporary art.
The sustained rhythm of biennales, exhibitions and fairs seems to have helped the market achieve healthy and constant growth, far removed from suspicions about speculation that traditionally accompany the development of emerging art scenes. Paris will continue to be the focus of African Contemporary Art in 2017, with exhibitions at La Villette and the Fondation Louis Vuitton, and with Africa as Guest of Honour at Art Paris Art Fair. PIASA have a long-term commitment to specialist auctions, and the next Origins & Trajectories sale will feature nearly 60 established and emerging artists from the Maghreb to Sub-Saharan Africa. A curatorial approach has been adopted to help connoisseurs and collectors get to know and find their way around a burgeoning artistic scene where the emphasis is placed on quality and creativity – far removed from the clichés that surrounded African art until a few years ago. The sale will be in three sections: the renewal of African creativity; artists’ approach to the theme of migration; and a focus on female artists.
