The Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) offers a rigorous and interdisciplinary approach to the media arts.

With its project-based « Media and Fine Arts » diploma degree, it emphasizes the development of artistic practice, together with the acquisition of media technology and media-theoretical skills. The Academy pursues an interdisciplinary approach to the teaching and researching of media and visual arts.

The department of art at the KHM is offering the following position, starting from the
winter semester of 2024/25:

Assistant Professor (Künstlerisch-Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter*in) for Contemporary Art with a Focus on the Global South (m/f/d)

up to German salary grade TV-L 13, full-time, fixed-term.

The Department of Art’s most recent addition, Contemporary Art with a Focus on the Global South, presents students with an interdisciplinary praxis guided by a set of methodologies and principles that shift away from a previously western-dominant art canon. The term Global South is used independently from its geographical meaning. It refers to currently prevailing neo-imperial structures, geopolitical power relations and the inequalities that accompany them.

The Academy of Media Arts Cologne is seeking an artist or creative researcher whose practice and research reflect upon the cultural, historical, and socio-political conditions of the Global South. In addition to a degree in Art, Art History, or a related creative field, the future job holder should be familiar with, through their own research and/or practice, contemporary artistic practices and forms of knowledge production specific to the Global South.

A significant focus of the position is the continuous support of student projects. In addition to research-specific knowledge of themes and philosophies related to the subject, a decolonial pedagogical approach combined with a sensibility towards diverse student identities (gender, race, class, disability, sexual orientation) is expected to be incorporated as part of the teaching methodology. A good knowledge of English is required.

The candidate’s responsibilities include participation in the organization and implementation of courses, supervision of student projects, participation in artistic development and research projects, as well as involvement in the self-administration of the university and organizational support for the art subject group. The Academy of Media Arts Cologne actively encourages applications from all those who can contribute, through their research, teaching, lived experiences, and service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community at KHM.

According to the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contracts), submitting an individual qualification proposal is a prerequisite for this fixed-term employment contract.
Applicants are therefore asked to state – in writing (max. 4 pages, including time schedule) – the individual research and/or artistic goals they aim to achieve during this temporary employment at the Academy of Media Arts.

The fixed-term employment contract is subject to the individual qualification goals and is limited to a period of up to 6 years.
Remuneration is defined by the Tarifvertrag (Collective Agreement for the Public Service) up to Entgeltgruppe (salary grade) TV-L 13.

The Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) is an equal opportunity employer committed to creating a discrimination-free learning, teaching and work environment and works towards removing structural barriers (such as physical abilities, language, nationality/ethnicity, age, gender, heteronormative, and others). It aims to increase the proportion of women in areas in which they are underrepresented. Applications by women with equivalent qualifications and professional expertise will therefore be given priority. The KHM explicitly encourages qualified candidates with migrant background and/or who are BIPoC to apply. People with recognized disabilities and their equals will be given preferential consideration in the case of equal suitability.

Submitted material should include a cover letter, CV, a qualification proposal, and a portfolio, i.e. relevant documentation of artistic work.

Please submit detailed applications with the relevant documents exclusively online via the following link www.khm.de/stellen by 7th Febuary 2024.

Please note that applications sent by post or by email cannot be considered.
