The idea behind the Invisible Borders Trans-African Photographic Initiative dates to 2009, at the 8th photography biennale, Rencontres de Bamako, in Mali.
The focus of this project is on a road trip taken by Nigerian photographers and writers who, joined by other artists, set out from Lagos to cross Africa, participating in various photographic events, festivals and exhibitions. During stops along the way, the artists develop photographic, video and text works that address the notion of the border and the theme of separation between the countries on the African continent, while at the same time reflecting on their interactions with local artists, cultural operators and residents. The road trips are supplemented by exhibitions, workshops and events in Africa, America and Europe in which the results of the journeys are presented and discussed. Invisible Borders is a platform to promote long-term, trans-African artistic relationships within the continent, overcoming the borders between the disciplines, providing talented young individuals with a springboard to success, and contributing to discourse on societal themes by means of artistic intervention.
