StArt Art Gallery announces the upcoming exhibition Finding Memories: an everyday archive of independence. This exhibition opens on 11 February at 6PM Namibia / 4PM UK / 11AM US EST online via Zoom.

Participating artists include: Tuli Mekondj, Isabel Katjavivi, Shomwatala Shivute, Lok Kandjengo, Petrus Amuthenu,Ndinomholo Ndilula

These artists have responded visually and performatively to the idea of an ‘Everyday Archive of Independence’, contributing artworks about the time around Namibian Independence. These artists have drawn on their experiences and that of their families and acquaintances using a wide variety of media and approaches. Using photography, clothing, stitching, painting, audio, printmaking and performance, these artworks are an important addition to telling the complex story of Namibian Independence.

This exhibition stems from an existing project that started in 2020 which invited contributions of photographs or audio to an online space on https://www.startartgallery.com/everydayarchive. This Everyday Archive holds space for multiple voices and experiences of Independence in Namibia. Official narratives and photo-journalism from this time in history often focused on capturing the pain and suffering of this era. While these narratives play an important role in helping us remember the past they have also alienated us from our history and made it harder to talk about the past. This archive holds space for collective and personal remembrance of this era.
