Afterlives: German and European Postcoloniality. Artefacts. Museums. Art

Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, Germany
22 Nov 2013

Presentation of the he special issue of  darkmatter Journal  “Afterlives: German and European Postcoloniality. Artefacts. Museums. Art” edited by Artefakte//anti-humboldt and discussion.

After an introduction by the editors, the issue will be commented by Stefan Nowotny (philosopher, Goldsmiths University of London & eipcp – European Institute for Progressive Cultural Policies) and Katharina Schramm (anthropologist, Martin-Luther Universität Halle-Wittenberg).

In 2000 the German Parliament approved to re-build the destroyed former Prussian castle in Berlin’s centre. With the  plan of moving the collection of ethnographic artefacts into the Humboldt-Forum that will be housed therein the ensemble of the Museums Island shall eventually be completed in retrospect, enriched and enlighted by a cosmopolitan vision of German Nationhood entwined with a postcolonial jargon – though ignoring the considerable absence of any confrontation with the colonial history of Germany mostly considered as having been too short and without any further consequences.

The plans and debates concerning the Humboldt-Forum in Berlin give the background to approach and discuss several threads linked to a complex of issues raised in the contributions by Susanne Leeb, Lotte Arndt, Friedrich Bose, Larissa Förster and conversations with  Jean-Gabriel Leturcq, Françoise Vergès, Boris Wastiau, Edouard Planche,  Alice Creischer, Andreas Siekmann, and Max Jorge Hinderer Cruz.
