1-54 returns to La Mamounia between the 23 – 24 February 2019, with VIP Previews on the 21 – 22 February 2019.

For its second Marrakech edition, 1-54 will present 18 international galleries and the work of over 65 established and emerging artists. Once again the fair will be accompanied by a wider programme of events in partnership with local institutions across the city, including Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL), Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, Montresso* Art Foundation, Comptoir des Mines Galerie, Institut Français de Marrakech and Fondation Farid Belkahia among others. In parallel to the fair, 1-54 FORUM also returns to La Mamounia with daily talks and screenings curated by art historian and curator Karima Boudou.

1-54 FORUM – Let’s Play Something Let’s Play Anything Let’s Play
Curated by art historian and curator, Karima Boudou with the support of Olivia Peterson (1-54 FORUM Curatorial Assistant) the 1-54 FORUM programme entitled ‘Let’s Play Something Let’s Play Anything Let’s Play*’ will accompany the 2nd edition of the fair with daily sessions at La Mamounia. 1-54 FORUM will also host three evening sessions around the city at ESAV (L’École Supérieure des Arts Visuels de Marrakech), Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech and LE 18.

This year’s series of panels, artist talks and screenings has taken as its point of departure the life and work of Ted Joans (1928 – 2003), an African-American Surrealist painter, jazz musician and poet who lived in Morocco, and later Mali, from the 1960s. Bringing Joans back into the context of Morocco provides a rich ground to discuss the intertwined narratives of surrealism in Africa and its diaspora.

During 1-54 Marrakech, local galleries and cultural spaces across the city will host temporary exhibitions and events. All visitors are invited to explore the city of Marrakech and see what’s on during the week of the fair.
