TEMPORARY OCCUPATIONS 20.12

public venues, Maputo, Mozambique
06 Dec 2012 - 27 Dec 2012

Temporary Occupations 20.12 takes place in five public venues: “Foreigners” is the motto that serves as a starting point for the artistic intervention of six artists – five Mozambicans and one Angolan from different areas of creation. The actors are based in territories that easily identify with the proposed theme, and bring us very different approaches, both at the level of language and at the level of discourse of what can be the readings and meanings of the word “foreigner.”

Eugénia Mussa, João Graça Petit, Rui Tenreiro, Sandra Muendane, and Tiago Correia-Paulo are the five Mozambicans making presentations this year by using the media of painting, video, sound, and installation of objects to address a concept familiar to them, given that their academic and professional route has led each of them away from their country at one point or another. In this exhibition – made “at home,” made in “familiar” territory – the artists deepen our look at what it can mean to live as “another,” as a “stranger,” beyond the geographical dimension of the theme. The five artists will occupy, respectively, the Cristal Restaurant, the Embassy of Portugal, the Norwegian Embassy, Maputo Airport, and the Embassy of South Africa. Paul Kapela, an Angolan artist, reflects the themes of Bantu culture far beyond political boundaries. Reproductions of his most recent works can be seen in Maputo City.
