Maison de la Culture Douta Seck

On 23 April 1997, the former “Résidence de Médina” in the district of the same name in Senegal’s capital Dakar was baptised Maison de la Culture (House of Culture) by His Excellency, President Abdou Diouf, and was later renamed Maison de la Culture Douta SECK in honour of Douta Seck, the great man of culture. It constitutes a department linked to the cabinet of the Ministry of Culture. The Maison de la Culture Douta SECK is included in the national directory of historical sites and monuments.

The building houses various services of the ministry, including the music studio and the rehearsal room of the Orchestre National du Sénégal (ONS) and the Office for Public Relations and Documentation (Service des Relations Publiques et de la Documentation, SRPD). The Maison de la Culture Douta SECK is a centre of excellence, a centre for action research and for the diffusion and promotion of cultural activities. It is an institution with a national and international reputation. The mission of the Maison de la Culture includes the promotion of encounters, an exchange of experiences and a convergence with regard to establishing a vibrant centre of creativity; processing and recovering cultural information by disseminating and publicising a specialised documentation; establishing a creative space for children and teenagers to foster their development; actively promoting stage arts, fine arts and multimedia arts; supporting and supervising national and international cultural projects; supporting and protecting the material and immaterial cultural heritage; supporting and expanding cultural cooperation and collaboration with diplomatic institutions and missions; and finally, building a network for a collaboration with the professional associations of cultural operators based on partnership.
