The Musée National du Mali is located in Bamako, the capital city of Mali, and was opened in 1953 as the Sudanese Museum. With the independence of the Republic of Mali in 1960, it became the national museum of Mali with the new mission of promoting national unity while honouring traditional Malian culture.
It presents permanent and temporary archaeological and ethnographic exhibitions, along with exhibitions of contemporary art. The collection of contemporary art is based on a donation by ADEIAO (Association pour la Défense et l’Illustration des Arts d’Afrique et d’Océanie). It comprises works by artists from a variety of countries, from Africa and beyond, including Iba N’Diaye (Senegal), Outtara Bakari (Côte d’Ivoire), Koraïchi Rachid (Algeria), Malangatana (Mozambique) and Boghossian Skunder (Ethiopia). The museum regularly presents portions of the Bamako Biennale for Photography along with other temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.
