Contemporary And (C&) facilitates a three-day Critical Writing Workshop for emerging art critics based in Atlanta, Georgia. It will take place at For Keeps books, 171 Auburn Ave, Atlanta from 24 March – 26 March 2023. The invitation is open to art writers in the early stages of their career.

The C& Critical Writing Workshop aims to:

• Facilitate the circulation of knowledge and experience among participants.
• Discuss arts reporting and critical writing practice particularly to attract a younger
  audience.
• Provide the tools of how to write reviews, comments and essays within a given
  timeframe.
• Mediate how to pitch topics to different media platforms.
• Give insights into the processes of editing.
• Link participants to a network of arts journalists contributing to C& with the
  possibility of publishing on C& online and other outlets.

Workshop Tutors
Jasmine Wilson Jasmine Wilson is an independent writer and curator from Atlanta, GA. Her creative practice centers criticism, healing, and care with a primary focus on artists of African descent. In recent posts, Jasmine has worked for the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art and assisted with various curatorial projects including Lava Thomas: Homecoming (2022). Jasmine has held positions at the High Museum of Art, Studio Museum in Harlem, and the AUC Art History & Curatorial Studies Collective at Spelman College. Her writings have appeared in Sugarcane Magazine, Contemporary And (C&), and Burnaway, among others.

Jasmine is a 2022 Peace Studio Fellow and 2021 Research Fellow for the Association of Historians of American Art. She has lectured for various institutions including the Georgia Institute of Technology and Spelman College. In 2022, Jasmine earned her MA in African American Studies from Clark Atlanta University, where she completed her thesis, The African Symbolism of Simone Leigh’s Brick House Sculpture. Jasmine holds a BA in English with Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude honors from Howard University.

Russel Hlongwane is a cultural producer based between Cape Town and Durban, South Africa. His work is located at the intersection of Heritage/ Modernity and Culture/ Tradition as they apply to black life on the continent and the diaspora. His said practice includes cultural research, film, creative producing, design theory, curatorship, writing and performance – often taking the form of installation. He has curated exhibitions and art platforms locally and abroad. His artistic work has shown extensively across Europe and Africa, whilst, to a lesser degree in the United States and Latin America. His experimental film, Ifu Elimnyama: The Dark Cloud’ received the Jury Prize (2019) at the Sharjah Film Platform. He has published through academic and art journals on design, artistic practice and urbanity. As a consultant, he works with cultural institutions and government departments who are concerned with providing meaningful support to creative ecologies. As part of this interest, he has served on the boards of many organisations in the sector. Hlongwane has also contributed to various panels and symposia on curating and urbanity. He is currently pursuing a MPhil in Southern Urbanism at the African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town. Russel is also a fellow at the Het Nieuwe Instituut (Netherlands) for 2022/ 2023.

A maximum of 20 applicants will be accepted. 10 spots are available for applicants from Atlanta University Center (AUC), Curatorial Studies and Art History Collective at Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Clark Atlanta University.

Eligibility:

The participants should:

• Have first journalistic/writing experiences in the cultural field. Senior writers with long-term experience will not be accepted.
• Be interested in a focus on visual arts.
• Be fluent in spoken and written English.
