Sulger-Buel Lovell, London, United Kingdom
24 Jan 2017 - 25 Mar 2017
Sulger-Buel Lovell presents Support Support, a new solo exhibition by celebrated Senegalese artist Soly Cissé, opening at the London gallery on the 24th January 2017. Support Support is Soly Cisse’s second solo exhibition in London with Sulger-Buel Lovell.
“Support Support” plays with the relationship between the subject and the periphery. By using colourful geometric prints Cisseì subverts the traditional hierarchy of the painted surface. Figures emerge and are lost into the background, which dominates the canvas, it becomes impossible to understand the forms without their relation to the space they inhabit. Familiar patterns emerge which are once again transformed by bodies and signs.
Cisseì’s spontaneous painterly movements, textured accents and neo-expressionistic techniques reflect the dissolution of contemporary society’s moral thresholds, shifts attributable to globalization and modernization. Shapeless human characters distort into anthropomorphic shadows of the other self; identities lost in translation from the past to the present, pattern and line intersecting, creating the layered configuration of Cisseì’s mythical visions.
“I think and reflect a lot about humans and their relationships. Relationships between humans, confrontation between humans and nature, humans and religion and then I challenge myself and experiment.” Cissé
Support Support runs from the 24th January – 25th March 2017, with an opening reception from 18h00 on the 24th January. Media and collectors welcome to view the works before that by appointment with the gallery.
