Simon Stone : New Paintings

SMAC Gallery presents New Paintings by Simon Stone that consists of an entirely new body of work, all produced during the course of 2016.

The exhibition – which includes oil on cardboard and a selection of large-scale paintings on canvas – sees Simon Stone returning to his lyrical juxtapositioning of land- and cityscapes, figures, still lifes and interiors, floating objects and intriguing abstract elements. Renowned for his various stylistic approaches and characteristic pin-board compositions, Stone sets numerous different genres alongside one another in paintings that are constructed around multiple images, providing a vivid and poetic account of his own personal journey.

New Paintings is Simon Stone’s third solo exhibition with SMAC Gallery. The exhibition will run until 26 November. For more information, please contact the gallery in Johannesburg.

Opening: Saturday, 22 October at 11:00 in Johannesburg.

Simon Stone was born in 1952 in Lady Grey, and currently lives and works in Cape Town. He graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, in 1976 and later continued his education in Italy. Since 1978, he has exhibited widely, both locally and abroad, and his work forms part of some of the most important public, corporate and private collections in South Africa and internationally.  In 2013, the Standard Bank Gallery, in collaboration with SMAC Gallery, presented Simon Stone: A Retrospective Exhibition in Johannesburg. This was the first comprehensive review devoted to Stone’s career of thirty-five years. Simon Stone: Collected Works, a chronological survey of the painter’s stylistic and thematic development from his student years to the present, was published to accompany this exhibition. In 2011, SMAC Gallery showed Stone’s solo exhibition Thrown Together in Cape Town. In 2014, his work formed part of the exhibition; Objects in the Tide of Time: Celebrating Our Permanent Collection at the IZIKO South African National Gallery in Cape Town. That same year, Simon Stone presented Both Sides of Now, his second solo exhibition with SMAC Gallery, in Stellenbosch.
