SMAC Gallery opened in 2007 on the first floor of the historic De Wet building on Church Street in Stellenbosch and garnered a reputation for presenting large, museum-quality modern and contemporary exhibitions, accompanied by well-researched catalogues, monographs, and books.

In 2011, SMAC opened a second gallery in central Cape Town to expand the scope of its activities. In November 2014, SMAC relocated its Cape Town gallery to a  newly renovated 1200-square-meter space in the gallery precinct of Woodstock, Cape Town.

SMAC represents a number of important established and emerging South African artists as well as international artists, in particular artists from the African continent. SMAC encourages international exchange by hosting and exhibiting well-known international artists such as Richard Long and Arnaldo Pomodoro as well as artists from the African continent such as Cyrus Kabiru. SMAC facilitates and organizes artist’s residencies in Cape Town as well as exchange programs which provide opportunities for South African and African artists abroad. SMAC also participates in international art fairs such as Arco Madrid; Artissima, Turin; 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair, London; and Loop, Barcelona – to name a few.

SMAC is committed to a dual program of museum-quality exhibitions that contribute towards artistic discourse in the country and abroad, as well as a strong contemporary focus which taps into the growth of Cape Town as a new contemporary art hub and an international platform for African contemporary art.
